NEW LEGISLATION – Feb 2012
Transport of Dangerous Goods – Information to Local Authorities
The Johannesburg Fire Brigade and Emergency Services remind operators of vehicles transporting dangerous goods of the requirements of the National Road Traffic Act, Chapter 8 and the Incorporated Standards referenced in the Regulations. SANS 10231 makes specific reference to a requirement that the operator shall inform all the emergency services on the route that the vehicle will travel of the following:-
- The product to be transported
- The approximate quantity per day/per week/per month
- The nature of the hazard/s associated with the product
- The intended route
See SANS 10231 Clause 4.2.3 for more information. It is recommended that a letter indicating the
above information as well as the location from where the dangerous goods are transported, be included. The letter should be faxed or sent by registered mail and a copy of the transmission slip or registered mail receipt be retained as proof of submission. It is best to also check with the emergency services exactly what they require and how the information should be communicated to them.
ISO 19011
End 2011, ISO published an updated edition of the ISO19011 auditing standard. It will assist organizations to optimize and facilitate the integration of their management systems and, in facilitating a single audit of its systems, will streamline the audit processes and reduce duplication of effort and decrease disruption of work units being audited.
Changes to the standard: Compared to the first edition of the standard published in 2002 which applied only to ISO 9001 (quality) and ISO 14001 (environment) ,the scope of the new ISO 19011:2011, Guidelines for auditing management systems, has been expanded to reflect current thinking and the complexities of auditing multiple integrated management system standards (MSS).
